cathedral - permanent public art installation

the crown road wall installation - a visual narrative exploring scottish beliefs systems and highland myths. this 65 metre long and 5 metre high wall based narrative took the better part of 1 year to complete from initial conversations through research trips to the artworks creation and finally installation in inverness city centre. many people, many conversations, many cups of coffee and a few pints of highland honey ale went into the creation this work commissioned by Inverness Old Town Art and funded by Highland Council.

The story I have written in my own very stark visual language is one which explores the belief systems of the highland community of Inverness and tells of their spiritual relationship with each other and with the land they inhabit, or perhaps the land which inhabits them, whatever the case I find it impossible to separate the two.

The three panel installation can be read on a few levels each offering more and more as the tale unfolds and the community about whom it was made and for whom it was created begin to interpret the visual narrative.

On an immediate and literal visual level the three panels explore the relationship that exists between the city and the land that surrounds it. You travel from the gated city, a gate that never shuts, over the skinny bouncing bridge and on into the rural wilderness beyond. A glance from a fast moving car or brief look from a swift footed tourist will get this immediate connection and hopefully the visual impact will encourage them to think a little more about the content of the work.

On a secondary level the panels might be read as a metaphysical landscape which travels from a formal, ritualised and stylised deer clan "city" end to an organic, natural perhaps shamanistic wolf clan "wilderness" at the lower end. The transitional panel through which you must travel between these two metaphysical spaces is a solitary journey across the narrow footbridge, abandoning your treasured worldly possessions, carrying all that you own. It is on this journey that you must weigh up these two alternative yet complimentary sides to spirituality that i have discovered co-exist in this highland community.

The artwork reflects this duality and explores this relationship with the natural environment. I am exploring the similarities and differences using stylised and natural forms of representation, each one yielding to the others authority as your eye travels across the work, the same yet contrasting, two ways of examining the contradictory fundamental needs that lies within so many of us.

Cathedral as the works' name is a dual reference. It refers to the film Logans’ Run where Cathedral is the name of the lawless overgrown and abandoned urban space populated by feral children that lies between the state controlled “utopia” and the untamed, mythic yet under populated natural wilderness beyond. Whatever you are searching for in this alternative society you must cross cathedral to find it. It is also a personal reference to the talk I attended by Neville Gabie in Inverness Cathedral at Re-Imagining the city which inspired me and touched my soul directly through the power of art and communication in a way no religion ever does.

THE INSTALLATION - a one week installation at the end of an eight week road closure meant we had to be very well prepared and organised for the installation, the weather and the plan held and everything went like clockwork. The panels were printed locally by acorn signs and are made of dibond an aluminium composite which is weather proof and robust enough for the roadside location.

me and forty pockets, so named for his penchant for wearing all his charitably 'gifted' coats at once. He often slept in the station when the weather was poor and the local people made sure he had enough clothes to keep him warm.

this shot gives an idea of the scale of the installation which is very difficult to imagine from the photographs in such an awkardly shaped location. making this space work was a real challenge during the design stages.

gate detail - showing the intricate level of detail in the gate as well as the very subtle textures of the woolen weave jumper based on actual weaves of Angus Mcphee the South Uist outsider artist who was resident in Craig Dunain Psychiatric Hospital outside Inverness for 50 silent years.

CONCEPT ARTWORK FOR CATHEDRAL - each of these panels contains more details which helped inform the stories i imagined behind the characters and their territories - again click for more detail if you want to read them.

The traveller, dressed by church and state in patterns extruded from tiles in the town house and the cathedral, weighs up the choices and questions raised. The grass weave below the wolf skull is also an exact copy of the handiwork of Angus Mcphee. Access to study and photograph his work was kindly given by Joyce Laing, of Art Extraordinary, who discovered the work of Angus in the grounds of Craig Dunain Psychiatric Hospital 1977.

The “DEER CLAN” figures are boys from the merkinch streets and young women from a series of local community groups. They wear their own outfits adapted to integrate the ancient weaves of Angus Mcphee outsider artist and patient at craig dunain, hopefully blending trainer culture with rich traditions from the outer hebrides that stretch back beyond printed history.

The “WOLF CLAN” figures of the wilderness similarly blend ancient pictish and celtic pattern making with contemporary global brand culture as well as patterns also drawn from the cathedral.

The artwork examines both our spiritual similarities as well as our differences, the belief systems followed in many contemporary religious doctrines sit along side the practices of those with alternative spiritual approaches. I am reflecting the similarities and differences using a combination of stylised and natural forms of representation. each style yielding to the others authority as your eye travels across the work, the same yet contrasting, two ways of examining the contradictory fundamental needs that lies within so many of us.

The gate patterns draw on tile designs from both the cathedral and the town house. The tendrils at one end of this section come from stone carvings also found on the outside of the cathedral. A textural representation of church and state.

Between the two collectives, tribes or communities lies the bridge, a territory where organic matter and stylised nature competes for control: or do they harmonise? Organic vines grow constantly, climbing all over the bridge while very formal, heavily designed vines flow from the gramophone counter attacking this landscape.

The outfits worn by these "feral" children are their own, designed spontaneously from scraps of cloth as they became a clan dedicated to protecting the myth of the last wolf in scotland and acted out their parts, surrounding the “den” another gateway or portal to safety, security and perhaps most importantly their imaginations.

absolutely nothings gets approved by highland council's tech services without a very thorough and rigorous series of technical discussions taking place so my former training as a design draughtsman in heavy engineering came in extremely handy in the discussions with the engineer and his staff who were surprised to find that an artist could be technically competent as well as creative.

AND FINALLY ITS COMPLETE

The artwork is intended to raise questions not answer them, to examine the belief systems not judge them and most importantly to blend truth, fiction, imagination and the power of belief to create a new highland myth for the “reluctant city” that Inverness has now become.

transform weekend saw the world famous John o’Groats hotel being turned into a giant canvas for myself and five other street artists. we descended on the 19th century hotel for a week - the original site of the home of dutch ferryman jan de groot - to turn it into a giant installation, before the venue is redeveloped. the makeover, carried out as part of the john o’groats “transform weekend" event, held on July 2-3, is part of the largest street art project ever seen in the highlands. the innovative scheme was produced by dufi, richie cumming, fraser gray, martin mcguiness and mike inglis. john o’ groats is part of our national psyche - it exists together with loch ness, the forth railway bridge and gretna green as iconic places in scotland. it was our absolute pleasure to play with this idea exploring aspects of childhood which ranged from dufi's playful cubes to the darker aspects explored by myself and the other artists.

the caravans explore my relationship with my father who was never more present than on our many treasured family holidays togethor. his death at 58 was a great shock and im not sure if you can really learn to cope with such an absence. these images beginning trying to explore those feelings. my father died on the last day of the fair fortnight, a traditional fife summer holiday, in july of 1991.

the feral child soldiers explore ideas that link with observations ive made of child soldiers in african countries such as liberia or the congo. these african children are snatched from their families, who are often killed in the process, and brainwashed to fight for causes they dont believe in or understand. a scottish childhood offers no such perils. our children can play innocently at soldiers just as generations before them did, in the woods with toy guns having fun being lara croft or some unknown character from a PS3 black ops game. they simply play. where they share an experience is in their "choice" of brands to wear. they have been "conditioned" to desire and wear the empty lifestyle brands of western mono cultured . perhaps my figures are cultural warriors who "fight" for brands they think stand for something. the figures also wear garments based on the grass weaves that an outsider artist called angus mcphee (gillie and lovatt scout) used to make clothes while he spent his long life in a mental hospital in inverness many miles away from his beloved south uist home - i copied the weave exactly from samples of his work which survived. these weaves are identical to examples found on preserved bodies found in European ice fields dated from over five thousand years ago. i like the ideas that begin to evolve when the two cultures sit side by side like this and are contained within the figures.

this is my contribution to the event promotion by TEN TRACKS in association with The Forest Cafe and Yuck n yum. roofraiser is a month of live music, wednesday-sunday, during april 2011 upstairs at the forest cafe, with additional gigs in the caves and the store (grv) in edinburgh. all proceeds from roofraiser events will be going towards the save the forest campaign. there is an auction of all artwork at the end of april from the ten artists, mine included, who have contributed to this decimal driven initiative.

In an area where I’m trying to get people to express their inner fears and ways of coping, the very hesitant retired mining community of broxburn found it difficult to express themselves with words. They don't want to, cant even begin to explain their feelings and no amount of prodding from me could ever get them to do so. Where their feelings do pour out however, where the community can partake of this rich emotional vein, is through the band. Broxburn & Livingston Brass Band to be exact. I’ve combined images of the band playing (in off duty clothes /as civilians) with textures in the clothing which link to pattern making that is extracted from shale – the contours of the lands, the ridges of the shale itself and the rich fossil life that is compressed between its layers. The textures link to the shale and the mines but also visualise the sound.

I’m combining the textures to create broxburns own version of a mariachi band - my tribute to the inner life they protect and witnessed in their playing at the band practice during a fantastically rousing version of ‘The March of Zorro’ which moved me tremendously, and truly revealed their life, their soul and their absolute survival spirit. The project on one level examines the rich links between people and place, however it also seeks to raise questions about existence in a very subtle way.

Degüello (slit throat) means ‘beheading’ or, idiomatically, ‘no quarter’ as in ‘no surrender' to be given or accepted-a fight to the death. Traditionally it was played by the mexican army to their opposition as a mark of respect prior to battle but also to signify no mercy will be shown. Something of the stoic nature of the Scots and the hard lives many experience seems to chime with this philosophy. This is the core concept driving my part of the shale people trail in Broxburn and Uphall, West Lothian. A prophetic title it turned out as the installation was almost completely destroyed over one crazed weekend by a tiny minority of rage filled "residents". Thankfully due to a fantastic and supportive response from the manufacturers of the figures, the sign company of Kirkcaldy, we were able to re-install and so far the figures continue to survive.

one installation, a collaboration between eight contemporary scottish artists, one bus, one four month long tour of scotland. my impossible nation consecrates the often introverted, belligerent but indomitable scottish psyche. we are a complex nation of repressed emotion and fierce loyalties, of ignorant prejudice tempered by lyrical belief systems. we are a constant contradiction and our own worst enemy but ever the underdog we shall endure all self inflicted trauma.

the two shows running concurrently at two galleries was a logistical and exhausting experience to set up, especially as they both opened on the same weekend, but it has been a worthwhile and valuable experience. it was great to be part of two of the most interesting and contemporary urban gallery spaces in scotland, recoat in glasgow and axolotl gallery in edinburgh. got some decent reviews and a mention in the skinny along the way as well.

fall of the new eden installation inverness

With this installation I have created a contemporary Garden of Eden based on an Albrecht Dürer etching entitled Creation of Adam and Eve (1504). Dürers' image and its interpretation of morality and responsibility raise many questions for me that are both contradictory and at odds with my own view of life and so my 3D installation finds a space ship crashing into the garden of Eden with spaceboy, spacegirl and reworked representations of the four humors in skeletal form.

This installation allows me to explore a rich array of themes about contemporary life, religious faith and personal responsibility as well as corporate capitalism and our new morality. It explores the relationship between science and faith and the conflict that exposes, as well as exploring myth, metaphor and narrative on multiple levels. It carries ultimately a message, which is a warning and a question, one that can be read as either a positive or a negative. Hopefully it allows pause for thought at least.

The setting of the shop asks the viewer to draw clear comparisons between religious original sin and the very recent banking crisis/crash and the subsequent recession that has produced the empty shop that houses the installation. It asks us to question our own sense of judgment about “greedy” financial houses and make a clearer comparison to our own needs to satiate personal consumer driven appetites. It also questions personal responsibility in how we recover from this position long term.

I have tried to examine the conflict that arises when a society is compromised by having such gulfs between its founding principles, its personal moralities, its desires and their consequences as well as our need for an omnipotent figurehead to blame in a crisis or to save us from ourselves. "Mike Inglis’s striking three dimensional installation NEW EDEN (Ex Video Drive-In shop front, 83-85 Church Street) explores the idea of a contemporary Garden of Eden in a reinterpretation of Albrecht Dürer’s 1504 engraving the Creation of Adam and Eve. The strong graphic style in stark black, white and red, depicting a faceless space boy and girl attended by four skeletal humours, translates the allegorical language of art relegated to history into a graffiti tag for our time.

inverness graffiti artists DUFI invited myself and 3 other contemporary urban artists [were all rough cut buddies] to take part in re-imagining the centre 2 the second city wide inverness arts festival. we brought a cutting edge to the surfaces of Baron Taylors Street in the Old Town for their project IN HONOUR OF SEPTEMBER where we were all treated like royalty by our hosts finn and al who couldnt have been kinder or more hospitable if they tried. it was a blast...mike inglis, martin mcguiness, kirsty whiten, ritchie cumming, and the irrepressible DUFI.

southpaw was altered simply by shooting the book and adding minimal text; guerilla was deconstructed and overprinted with left wing texts by tom wintringham and art school theory from walter gropius as well as anarchist texts.

ROUGH CUT NATION. A LARGE SCALE COLLABORATIVE TAKEOVER OF THE SCOTTISH NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY BY A GROUP OF CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS. rough cut documentary by beanland films and time lapse by rich cumming with music by tut vu vu with some of my contribution to rough cut nation at the scottish national portrait gallery - the portrait of "buffalo girl" catherine moore my aunt who died aged 5 in a tragic accident. this piece starts to develop new themes using a 'china cabinet shrine' installation exploring death, grief and spiritualism from a very personal scottish perspective. this piece work will be developed into a new body of work later this year. the rest of my contribution consisted of human scale paste ups embedded with the other artists work all around the gallery. this was the most rewarding part of the experience, working so closely with the other artists in a hugely collaborative manner.

I work with screen-printing a lot, I find I am producing narrative based work which is very graphic and quite figurative and need an output that suits those ideas. Screen-printing seems an obvious route to realise these images, the process is so immediate and can be very graphic and so appeals for those reasons.

In a transitional process some of the original artwork that I produced for the book also becomes new grafitti ‘icons’ which I paste up in the street completing a cycle which metaphysically and geographically links the prints, books and shrines with a series of found and picked urban locations that reach from Amsterdam and Rome to Dundee and Edinburgh.

a few artist books and one box assemblage. junky is a based on the auto-biographical writings of william burroughs. hunger explores intimate relationships using found flyers, polaroid photos and a deconstructed anais nin novel. frontier explores social protest using a deconstructed book which details the attempts of east berlins citizens to escape over the wall overprinted by graffitti and german tourist phrasebook statements. time traveller explores relationships and childhood.
